“Behind The Scenes”

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be backstage at the theatre? Woodlawn Arts Academy and the director and cast of “Aida” at Sterling High School are giving elementary students the chance to go “Behind the Scenes” on Saturday, February 25.

Children in kindergarten through eighth grade can go “Behind the Scenes” on the morning of Saturday, February 25. From 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., participants will enjoy a pancake breakfast, go on stage to learn a song and dance from “Aida,” have a backstage tour, create an Egyptian craft, and try on stage makeup and costumes.

Cost of “Behind the Scenes” is $10. Children must be checked in and out of the event by an adult. Adults can join their students for breakfast for $5 each, and are welcome to wait in the Commons area or Centennial Auditorium at Sterling High School during the event. Register by February 21 at Woodlawn Arts Academy or online at www.activenet.active.com/woodlawnarts; the activity code is WABTS-Sp.

The event is a fundraiser for the Woodlawn Arts Academy Triple Threat and Dance Performance Teams, who will travel to Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida, in July. During the trip, each team will perform on a Disney World stage and receive training from Disney professionals.

Elton John and Tim Rice’s “Aida” is a contemporary musical take on a grand classic tale of the timeless bond between an enslaved Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier. As forbidden love blossoms between them, the young lovers are forced to face death or part forever. Together, they set a shining example of true devotion that ultimately transcends the vast cultural differences between their warring nations, heralding a time of unprecedented peace and prosperity. Directed by Tim Schlegel, Sterling High School presents “Aida” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, February 24 and 25, and 2 p.m. Sunday, February 26. Call (815) 622-3248 for ticket information.
